Frederiksberg New Squares

Using sound and light, renowned Danish landscape architect Stig L. Andersson has created a beautiful and dynamic city space in Frederiksberg.
Frederiksberg New Squares

Frederiksberg is an independent municipality located in the middle of Copenhagen and is well-known for having some of the capital's greatest nature, culture and architecture. Yet for years a central part of the town was an unplanned mess of buildings, unused areas, parking lots etc. This fate has now been reversed with the completion of Frederiksberg New Squares.

The squares now welcome the citizens with beautiful and rare installations of light, sound and water, which create impressions for all the senses. The viewer can experience sounds and music trickling from the underground and enjoy illuminated fog banks of water drops.

Realdania is supporting the project as part of its nationwide initiative “Better City Spaces”. The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the social life of cities and raise awareness of the significance of city spaces in sustainable city development. The project Frederiksberg New Squares has been carried out by Stig L. Andersson Landscape Architects on the basis of ideas by Henning Larsen’s Drawing Office and Jan Gehl Urban Quality Consultants.

The total project budget for Frederiksberg New Squares is approximately EUR 9.9 million, of which Realdania has funded EUR 1.3 million.

The building client of the project is the Municipality of Frederiksberg.
