For thousands of years, the inhabitants of the West coast of Jutland have built boats for sea fishing. While in the past the weather was the strongest enemy, today the battle lies in the privatization of fishing quotas, which has rendered the coastal landing places superfluous.

The last of the clinker-built sea boats are disappearing, but the recently established local society, Han Herred Sea Boats, refuses to accept this. They defy all opposition and are now moving in the complete opposite direction by re-establishing the coastal landing places by Slettestrand in Jammerbugten.

Their great ambition is to preserve the building culture of the coastal region by, for one thing, renovating the fish warehouse and the run-down winch, and secondly by establishing a new boat builder’s yard in which to build the area's typical boats.

The environmental centre in Ålborg has granted an exemption, making it possible to incorporate a quality building in line with the traditional building culture in the middle of the otherwise protected dune area. In this way, the area gets an open place of work, where visitors can stop by and experience the building of boats firsthand.

At the new coastal culture centre, tourists will also be able participate in fishing and sailing trips along the coast.
